Exercise 3: Resting Space

A painting exercise focused on spatial awareness, exploring how color, shape, and empty space interact to create stillness and quiet tension.

Instructions

  1. Paint one bold, solid shape anywhere on the page. Choose any form: circle, square, or irregular.
  2. Leave the surrounding space untouched; the white space is part of the composition.
  3. Add a second shape in a different color, placing it far from the first to create distance.
  4. If any two shapes touch or overlap, then paint a smaller connecting shape between them.
  5. Continue adding shapes until the page feels evenly balanced between filled space and white space.
  6. Step back. If one area feels heavy, then balance it with a lighter, smaller mark elsewhere.
  7. Stop when the composition feels calm and intentional—not crowded, but also not empty.
